History Of Moneglia

Moneglia

Moneglia, a charming gem on the Italian Riviera, has a fascinating past. Its known history stretches back to Roman times when it was called Ad Monilia. The strategic location along the coast made it an important settlement for trade and defense.

During the Middle Ages, Moneglia gained prominence under the Republic of Genoa. The Genoese acquired it in 1173 and established it as a powerful outpost. They built two castles, Villafranca and Monleone, to protect against neighboring rivals like the Malaspina family.

Though small, Moneglia played a role in regional conflicts. Notably, its wealth and connections contributed to the Battle of Meloria in 1284, where the Genoese triumphed over Pisa. This victory solidified Genoa’s control of the Mediterranean trade routes.

Over time, Moneglia experienced various foreign dominations. Despite these challenges, the town maintained its charm and resilience. Eventually, Moneglia became part of Italy as Liguria joined the Kingdom of Italy in the 19th century. The town’s rich history, with its stunning architecture and historical sites, invites you to explore its streets and learn about its past.
