Chiavari

Chiavari’s origins trace back to ancient times, with the earliest settlements dating to around the 8th and 7th centuries BC. It served as a strategic port for the Etruscans.

In Roman times, the area was known as Tigullia. Evidence of a necropolis in the city center confirms its historical significance.

During the Middle Ages, the town began to flourish. It was first mentioned as “Chiavari” in documents from 980 and 1031. The town developed with medieval architecture, including arcades that still stand today, providing a quaint charm.

Chiavari was an important center under the Republic of Genoa. A town center and castle were established during this period, leaving a lasting imprint on its landscape.

During the early 1800s, Chiavari became the capital of the Apennines Department under Napoleon’s First French Empire. When the Kingdom of Two Sicilies rose, Chiavari again shifted allegiance, eventually becoming part of unified Italy in 1861.

Today, you can explore the rich layers of its past in the Old Town, highlighting its evolution from an ancient port to a bustling medieval hub. Delight in the historic ambiance while discovering Chiavari’s cultural treasures.
